10 tips on how to choose your website’s domain name

1. It is a good option to make your domain name be the name of your website. Your site will rank higher if its name matches with its domain name. There are however instances wherein the name you want is already taken. This brings us down to the next tip…

2. If you think of a good name, register it right away before anyone else will beat you to it.

3. Do avoid plural names because a slight misspelling could lead your visitors away from your site and land somewhere else. You may register misspelled versions of your domain name also, just in case.

4. Keep your domain name short–simple and short names are easier to remember. Your domain name can have as many as 67 characters but you would not want people to type in 67 characters just to get to your site, would you?

5. Avoid hyphenated names unless you want to mouth my-dash-site-dash-name-dot-com always. People would most likely say “Mysitename dot com” if they refer your site and may not mention the hyphens. It is also easier to forget names with hyphens although where keywords are concerned, they rank better because search engines can pick your site out easier from the rest.

6. .com is easier to remember than the other extensions. People would opt to go for .net if the .com version of the domain name they want is unavailable but again, it could lead visitors to the other site–so if you will advertise your website, always include .net when saying it. You might need to keep reminding them that it’s .net though. If you want less hassle, go for .com–it’s been around for ages and people would most likely think of it if they type in your site’s domain name.

7. You can register many domain names to point to different pages or products in your site. Yep. This is when you want to maximize your visibility. Be careful though because if you point many domain names to a single page, it will make your ranking in search engines drop.

8. If you want, you can buy your domain name using all other available extensions (.com, .net, .org, .mobi etc).

9. Research on good keywords you will use on your site and use it as part of your domain name.

10. Register a domain name for your products AND the name of your company–because one domain name may not be enough to be visible online.
